Apples and Book Buddies

We have had a VERY busy week!  We have been learning about apples, the parts of an apple, the lifecycle of an apple tree, and what people do with apples.  Today we got to make applesauce!  Students learned that we needed a recipe, which can be found in a cookbook.  (We used a cookbook that Mrs. Baltos has since she was in Kindergarten!).  We knew that we needed ingredients and that we had to follow the directions to make the applesauce.  We cut and peeled the apples, added sugar, cinnemon, and water to a pot and then cooked them.  The apples smelled SO good cooking all day long.  At the end of the day, we got to enjoy fresh, WARM, applesauce!  The students really enjoyed eating it the best and the WHOLE crockpot full of apples was gone by the end!  See pictures below!

We also got to meet our book buddies.  I am so excited that we have paired with Mrs. Caron's Fifth Grade.  Once, every two weeks, we will be meeting with our Fifth grade friends for a story.  The fifth graders read to K and we read a story back to them.  We hope that we will not only read stories with our friends, but also play games or do a special craft. See a few pictures below!

Reminder: Library is tomorrow!  Please return your library books! And NO school on Friday and Monday!  Enjoy the weekend.

Some other classroom learning:

Literacy: We have been working on the "popcorn" words: I, a, see, the, can, an, am.  We "graduated" the words: I & a to our word wall!  Everyone has learned these two words.  We have also been working on the letters E & D.  Each week, I send home letter books.  Please encourage your child to read these books to you, if you have not done so. Also, encourage your child to use their "magic finger" to help them read (ask them to point to the words as they read). This will help your child not only learn the letters, but build their understanding on how to read a book.

Math:  We have been working on describing objects and shapes, counting to 100, and sorting objects.  We have also started learning how to collect data.

Writing:  We are working on telling true stories and using the popcorn words in our writing.  We are writing stories by telling where we went, who we went with, what we did, and how we felt.  We are working on matching our pictures to our words.

Almost every day, students have an explore time.  This is where we are working on being kind, being respectful, and being responsible.  Students are learning to "use their words" when they need something from a friend or need help.  We are learning to be patient and to share our things with others.

Needed items:  If you are willing, we are in need of a few classroom supplies.  We could really use:

  • Paper plates- Small & Large ones
  • Plastic spoons
  • Paper cups
Thank you SO much in advance.

I hope you have a great rest of your week and I look forward to working with your children everyday!

Love,
Mrs. Baltos
